| Abstract |
This contribution aims to clarify what is understood by 21st century skills and what the (counter-) arguments are for adopting 21st century skills in the curriculum. The discourse around the position of the 21st century skills in the curriculum is examined and illustrated for two skills: critical thinking and digital literacy. Next, the ways nations and schools develop and implement 21st century skills in their curriculum is addressed. Finally, prominent issues for the implementation of the 21st century skills in the curriculum are discussed.
