Abstract Hearing adult learners of sign languages face specific challenges in that they need to acquire a new language (L2) in a new modality (M2). Most sign languages are not standardized and are not fully described (e.g., no reference grammar is yet available), and it is hard to find fluent L1 users. These factors contribute to the complexity of sign language assessment and necessitate the adaptation of standard spoken language test assessment procedures, with added factors like iconicity, paucity of research, and language politics confusing the issues yet further.
