Abstract
The study of child psychopathology needs a greater balance between the collection of empirical data and the development of theoretical models. The discipline of developmental psychopathology provides a theoretical framework for the study of various emotional and behavioral disorders in childhood. This article discusses anxiety and anxiety disorders from a developmental perspective, disorders that are considered the outcome of dynamic transactions between intra- and extra-organismic factors. Within a transactional model, the concepts of developmental tasks, risk and protective factors are used to understand and explain the etiology, stability and comorbidity of anxiety and anxiety disorders.
