| Abstract |
Discusses distorted cognitions and dysfunctional cognitive processes, such as biased attention and memory, which appear to be associated with anxiety problems in children. Research on the specificity of this association is analyzed. Further, studies on the development of an anxious cognitive style, on the child's developing potential for cognitive regulation of anxiety, and on the assumption that children may be cognitively vulnerable to developing anxiety are evaluated. The need for more longitudinal research in the testing of the cognitive view of anxiety is stressed. Finally, a more important role for cognitive-behavioral treatment outcome studies in determining the role of cognition in childhood anxiety is proposed.
