| Abstract |
The aim of this chapter is to engage with the literature on the role of space and place in education with a specific focus on the nexus of neighbourhood and school in urban areas. It argues that to understand how educational inequalities relate to the different spaces they manifest in, it is crucial to comprehend how various aspects of the institutional context connect to the social geographies of education. Developing the concept of educational landscape, this chapter outlines how educational systems interact with social inequalities across intersections of class, race, gender and other dimensions. It concludes that cities are specific educational landscapes that provide a lens for studying both the strengths and weaknesses of the educational system as a whole.
