Abstract The paper discusses concepts of political writing in the German context and confronts in particular the concept of the literary intellectual and the 'littérature engagée' on the one hand with a concept of subversive writing on the other. There are four forms of subversive writing: revolutionary-political manifestos, (neo-)avantgardistic texts, the literature of distinctive minorities and literary forms of deconstruction. In contemporary German literature, Karen Duve and Juli Zeh represent the 'littérature engagée' whilst Lady Bitch Ray and PeterLicht are examples for subversive writing.
