Abstract
Starting from Jacques Rancière we can conceive the relationship between aesthetics and politics anew, like in German idealism, as a unity of contradiction. Rancière connects this relationship with a romantic concept of 'the political'. But irrespective of that he reconstructs it as a 'historical apriori' under the mentioned idealist principle. This has, going beyond Rancière, ambivalent consequences for the conception of play. The attractiveness as well as the calamity of that conception are determined by the 'regimes' of modernity which turn out as differentiated forms of the dialectical principle of contradiction.
