Abstract Although mathematics became a truly worldwide endeavour in the last century, Africa remained a blank spot for a long time. Fortunately this is changing rapidly and many new initiatives have been launched to promote mathematics on the African continent. In the past few years, Diletta Martinelli, an assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam with a passion for geometry and education, has been involved in several of these projects. In this article she shares her experiences with us.
