Abstract This essay briefly sketches why the European Union normatively and institutionally can be said to live up to common standards of parliamentary democracy and democracy in a broader social sense. It sketches the merits of the present arrangement that decisions defending and protecting democracy under threat in a member state are mainly up to the member states. It also argues for the importance of focussing on democracy rather than on the rule of law and fundamental rights, as the Union has done for too long.
