Abstract In video-recorded street fights between groups, I search for patterns and try to explain them. At the start, opponents agitate each other through threats and provocations. When a critical level of agitation is reached, the proportion of permanent defectors determines whether violence breaks out in a burst or a fizzle, explained by and Ising spin glass model. Due to mishap, violence is regularly interrupted; the interevent times have a lognormal distribution, explained by a multiplicative process.
