| Abstract |
Moral functioning is explored in relation to mental health as eudemonia, or human flourishing. Building on this framework, we explore the historical evolution of cultural understandings of morality, and relate these trends to contemporary psychological research traditions. The consequences of moral functioning are considered in the context of mental health, and the possibility that moral reasoning can produce depression and anger and yet remain reflective of healthy functioning is explored. Finally, the promotion of moral functioning is considered.
