Abstract In the seventeenth and eighteenth century the Dutch East India Company (VOC) did not only bring spices and textiles from Asia to the Netherlands, but also transported exotic animals on their ship. This publication deals with the questions: which animals were they, why did the VOC transport them, and what was their history on the ships and in their 'new' home? Each chapter (ten) deals with one animal or animal species, for instance the cassowary, parrots from the east and from the west, elephants, Indian rhinos and sloths.
