The German emigré Helmut Salden (1910‒96) came to the Netherlands towards the end of the 1930s, where he embarked on a career as a lettering artist. However routine the literary book’s interior often proved to be from a typographical point of view, lettering artists were free to astonish in terms of the book jacket. Within this field, Salden moved with extraordinary virtuosity and versatility. This monograph discusses the production of Salden's hand lettered jackets and their formal charactaristics.
