Abstract One aspect of the RELIGARE project is devoted to a socio-legal investigation on, in particular, the interaction between ‘secular and religious’ values in a context of increasing cultural diversity in Europe. The emerging conflicts may be between religious groups and public authorities, but can also occur within and among different religious groups as well as secular (organized or otherwise) groups. The conflicts of interest in this research result from inherent basic tensions in and between the principles, norms and basic rights of liberal-democratic constitutionalism.
