| Abstract |
This article presents a short historical overview of the different types of lenders that are active in the origination of residential mortgage loans. First, a distinction is made between depository and nondepository lenders. Second, there are two major types of depository lenders: commercial banks, on the one hand, and savings and loans institutions, buildings societies, Bausparkassen, and the like, on the other hand. Regulation and deregulation in recent decades have impacted on the rise and fall of each of these lender types. The article also discusses different types of mortgage loans.
