Highlights •We analyzed the role of negative emotions in the diaries of people with dementia. •Our focus was on the expression of their personal experience. •Negative emotions were related to unfulfilled needs of people with dementia. •Balancing the negative and positive aspects helps them with sensemaking and coping. •People with dementia feel that social support empowers them. |
