| Abstract |
The renowned Dutch mathematician Johannes Gualtherus van der Corput was born 125 years ago. Now, 40 years after his death, his name is as well known to the international mathematical community as ever before. The Dutch Mathematical Society and the Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences honor his mathematical legacy with special issues of Indagationes Mathematicae. The articles demonstrate the great influence of his work, both in analytic number theory and the theory of uniform distribution. Common to both areas is the study of exponential sums. The 19 research papers by 33 authors present a broad spectrum of old and new research results.
Some information on Van der Corput’s life and work may be found in the article by Jaap Korevaar in the first issue. It is an expanded version in English of the obituary in Dutch that he presented to the Netherlands Academy in 1975. Because of the many papers that we received it became necessary to divide the articles over two issues of Indagationes. The first appeared at the end of 2015. This issue is the second. All articles are listed in in the table of contents at the next page. The editors thank the authors and referees who made this impressive tribute possible. |
