| Abstract | The Amsterdam playwright Joost van den Vondel created his Joseph trilogy during the opening years of the Schouwburg to fuel the Amsterdam city theatre's popular repertory. The three works feature the biblical hero and his changing fortunes during three different stages of his life. There is one key theme, however, in all three plays: ability and unability to see the truth. This study examines the key theme for the entire trilogy, focusing on textual and visual elements in the plays, and the emotional effects of word and image in paragone. |
