Abstract The paper uses three prominent examples from the Dutch context to problematise the relationship between contractual and social solidarity in the corona crisis. The social science ideal types of “mechanical” and “organic” solidarity, and their typified correspondence with legal modes of punishment and compensation, are used to illuminate the way in which solidarity language in private relationships can convey and normalise assumptions about the public interest and economic order.
