Abstract
Women from ethnic minority groups have become more prominent in politics. With this development comes the question whether they are treated the same by the media as other groups of politicians. While the influence of a politician’s gender and ethnicity on media coverage separately have been much studied, intersectional research on media coverage is scarce and largely conducted in Anglo-Saxon countries. We conducted a quantitative content analysis of newspaper articles from the four largest Dutch newspapers. Outer-European politicians (both female and male) were more likely to receive negative than positive coverage, while Dutch men were still quoted most frequently. Moreover, the gender of Outer-European women was most often highlighted; The role of journalist’s gender seems limited, just like the influence of outlet type (quality versus popular newspapers).
