Abstract Every dentist has observed the fact that pain symptoms and responses are different among the patients in his or her practice. This is especially true for patients who seek treatment for temporomandibular disorders (TMD), because some of these patients do well when appropriately treated, whereas others continue to have pain. Also, some patients in the latter group may have other somatic pain symptoms that are accompanied by psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression. What is the most likely explanation for these differences?
