Abstract
This article highlights the key position of Amsterdam's first public theatre, the Schouwburg (est. 1638), as a European power house of drama productions, importing works from various European traditions on the one hand, and thus providing an essential source for emerging theatres in Germany and Copenhagen on the other. Case in point is the German theatre entrepreneur Michael Daniel Treu, and his repertoire in the 1660s, which featured the most popular of Amsterdam's local and international productions. The article identifies the individual plays from European theatre traditions, and comments on the ways they came to Germany, highlighting the ways of transfer and the adaptation techniques applied in Amsterdam.
