| Abstract | The Special Collections Department of the Library of the University of Amsterdam hosts a rich collection of diverse items related to the circus. Now that it is 250 years after the beginning of the modern circus as developed by Philip Astley (1742 - 1814) the chapter focusses on the early years in London and the history of the circus till the present day in the Netherlands. |
