Abstract Highlights
•Left- and right-wing Eurosceptic parties draw different types of supporters.
•Lower educated support the Eurosceptic right, but not the Eurosceptic left.
•Left-wing supporters oppose the current EU, but not further strengthening of the EU.•Right-wing supporters oppose the current EU as well as further EU strengthening.
•These differences exist both cross-nationally and over the 1989–2014 period.
