Abstract Social capital can be an important poverty reduction tool in smallholder farming communities. People may turn to friends, kin or community members for assistance in times of hardship and need. People may also participate in formal or informal community groups to organize savings and support. Community groups can have personal, economic and social benefits. However, community groups a e not always accessible to the poor. Besides, community groups are not always effective in reaching the set goals.
