Abstract The EU enlargement strategy has fundamentally changed over the last ten years. This has major implications for today’s applicants from the Western Balkans. This article offers a historical analysis of the EU enlargement after the collapse of communism. What are the lessons learnt one decade after the big bang enlargement of 2004-2007?
