Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Bissing was a rich German collector who assembled one of the largest private collections of Egyptian antiquities. He also taught Egyptian art history; first in Munich, then in Utrecht. The hard times that followed the First World War brought financial trouble, forcing him to sell large parts of his collection. As a result, several objects from this collection found its way to the Allard Pierson Museum. He was forced to sell the last remaining pieces of his collection due to the financial hardship that followed the Second World War.
