| Abstract |
This thesis had two main aims: (1) to increase understanding of the social support networks of autistic adults, particularly within mental healthcare, and (2) to explore how network involvement can be promoted in clinical practice.
For the first aim, two instruments for use in mental healthcare to map the social support network in autistic adults were explored; 1) the Network in Action-Questionnaire, and 2) the Network in Action-Interview. In addition, we explored subtypes of social support network in autistic adults using a cluster analysis. Also, we investigated the relationships between the three subtypes we could distinguish and autism characteristics, mastery, and quality of life. For the second aim, facilitating and hindering factors to network involvement as experienced by mental healthcare professionals were documented. Professionals were highly motivated to engage in network involvement, and were supported by organisational policies. In addition, we explored the expectations of autistic clients, their network members and mental healthcare professionals regarding the Resource Group method. The method seems to have potential for highly specialized autism care, but also needs adaptations before further implementation. Finally, implications and future directions for research on network involvement in autistic adults are discussed. |
