Abstract We discuss the regulation of cellular plasticity, focusing on neurogenesis and apoptosis in the adult hippocampus, by stress, sleep, inflammation, and depression. This is the fourth of five chapters in this book that present not only clinical data but also experimental evidence from animal models relevant to the role of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) in affective disorders, together with Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 26. Moreover, this is the second of four chapters in this book that discuss the role of inflammation in affective disorders, together with Chapters 10, 16, and 17.
