| Abstract |
Tensions in Diversity. Spaces for Collective Life in Los Angeles by Felicity Hwee-Hwa Chan takes its readers through stories of lived diversity in three cities located in Los Angeles County: Central Long Beach, San Marino and Mid-Wilshire. A historical immigrant gateway, global city and site of capital accumulation, Los Angeles has known tensions arising at the intersection of cultural and socio-economic diversity. It is at this intersection that Chan's work comes in: All three places under investigation in her dissertation research have known tensions arising from ethnic and national diversity and represent different socio-economic profiles: from low-income in Central Long Beach to a mixed-income locale such as Mid-Wilshire and high-income enclaves such as San Marino.
