Abstract In this column we demonstrate with a simulated
example the problem of spurious regression for autocorrelated
data. This is another problem quality
engineers may encounter when investigating possible
input-output relationships. For example, suppose the
process is an industrial furnace and we want to see if
there is a possible relationship between an input variable
xt, such as fuel rate at a given time t, and the temperature
yt in the furnace.
