Diabetes care in hospitals across the Netherlands Real-world data and diabetes registry insights

This thesis provides a detailed overview of hospital care for people with diabetes mellitus in the Netherlands, focusing on cost drivers, care disparities, and patient outcomes. Structured into three parts, it aims to shed light on various aspects of diabetes management within the Dutch hospital system. Part I investigates hospital expenditures, identifying cost determinants for both pediatric and adult patients, with particular attention to the economic impact of advanced technologies and the burden of cardiovascular comorbidities. Part II examines inequalities in diabetes care, analyzing the influence of sex and socio-economic status on care characteristics and patient outcomes. Part III shows the value of the Dutch Pediatric and Adult Registry of Diabetes (DPARD), leveraging national registry data to examine trends in hospitalization, mortality, and associated risk factors. Together, these findings offer a comprehensive analysis of diabetes care in Dutch hospitals, using multiple nationwide data sources. The insights provided demonstrate the potential of real-world data and diabetes registry DPARD to aid in improving the quality and sustainability of diabetes care across the Netherlands.
