Abstract
In the early 1960s, whilst Dutch mainline Protestant and Catholic clergy advocated acceptance of "the homosexual neighbour", Pentecostals -- influenced by T. L. Osborn -- argued that homosexuality was a form of "demonic bondage" that could be overcome by means of faith healing. This view received but little support among other "Bible believing" Protestants in the Netherlands. Both Calvinists and Neo-Calvinists were skeptical about faith healing and, more importantly, about overcoming the power of sin. Instead of Pentecostal demonology, neo-Adlerian psychoanalysis -- advocated by Dutch, Roman Catholic psychotherapist Gerard van den Aardweg -- became the main source of inspiration for the Dutch "ex-gay" ministry EHAH alias Different (1975-2020). In the early 1980s, self-styled "ex-gays" gained importance because of the political controversy on equal treatment legislation. By then, however, the name "ex-gay" no longer meant a change in sexual attraction but just in sexual behavior (viz. abstinence) and identification.
