| Abstract |
Intersex people present nonnormative variations in the genetic and physiological constitution of their sex. The category is an umbrella term for a broad range of variations with different distribution within and across societies, and its boundaries are porous and contested. In technologically developed societies, infants born with visible intersex signs were subjected to invasive treatments until recent calls to rethink their usefulness.
