Abstract A certain fascination with artists and their studios is probably as old as the profession itself. Yet before the mid-nineteenth century, a visit to the artist’s studio was more or less reserved for those of noble heritage. This chapter explores the image of the artist as in the medium of the illustrated press and traces his advent as a public figure and celebrity.
