| Abstract |
Captain C.L. Walther Boer, who took over from Peter van Anrooy when the latter refused to conduct the Horst Wessellied during the gala performance at the royal wedding in 1937, was a multitalented musician who led a many-sided life - as a violoncellist, a conductor, a military band leader, a teacher, a conservatory director, a prisoner of war, an inspector, and a member of the honorary board that was to 'purge' Dutch music life after WW II. His life became intertwingled with the developments in Dutch/German relationships in the thirties. The book explains what happened before, during and after the gala concert of January 5, 1937, and explicates how Van Anrooy's refusal to conduct the Nazi anthem was judged in public opinion at the time.
