| Abstract |
The article provides a brief overview of major discussions that characterise contemporary Western academic studies analysing Islam and Islamic culture in imperial Russia. The author of the article pays special attention to two monographs published in late 2019 – early 2020, written by Nathan Spannaus and Danielle Ross. These two books have become part of a series of recent publications that criticize the study of the Muslim elite of Russia in the 19th and early 20th centuries in terms of its belonging to Jadidism or Qadimism. The article discusses the main arguments of this criticism.
