| Abstract |
A plant's growth, development and responses to the environment are intimately connected to internal and external signals that, through the action of signal transduction, regulate gene expression and other cellular outputs. Work from laboratories across the globe has deepened our understanding of how plant signaling works and culminated, in several cases, with structural portraits that explain important facets of signaling with atom-level resolution. The cell biological characterization of signaling pathways has additionally demonstrated the importance of location within cellular compartments, between different cell types and between tissue types, to the integrated functioning of signaling. This issue brings together a series of reviews that summarize recent advances in our understanding of plant signaling and gene expression, with an impressive scope that spans from the atomic to whole organism scales.
