| Abstract | In the Netherlands, the seventeenth century is always lurking round the corner. In Amsterdam, people shop at the P.C. Hooftstraat, grab a drink on Rembrandtplein, or take a stroll in Vondelpark. Great numbers of Dutch art lovers and tourists visit exhibitions on painters such as Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals. These names, anchored in Dutch collective memory, refer to the seventeenth century. In the ubiquitous presence of the heroes of this past in Dutch daily life, the historic distance and vital differences between the seventeenth and twenty-first centuries vanish. |
