Abstract This study reports on the identification of the extracellular MAPK ERK5 as a novel signaling molecule regulating adult hippocampal neurogenesis. The authors use an inducible and conditional mouse line to knockout ERK5 expression, specifically in the neurogenic regions of the adult brain and provide strong evidence for a crucial role of adult neurogenesis in several complex forms of hippocampus-dependent memory formation, including fear extinction and for the expression of remote memory.
