| Abstract |
In the context of this conference on Confucius and the significance of his teachings throughout the world, I will look at the Indonesian archipelago. The Indonesian nation, with, at the present time, more than 250 million inhabitants, was considered to be a Dutch colony until 1947/1949 and was ruled and governed by the tiny Netherlands accordingly. For several years I have carried out research on [the] book trade in the Dutch East Indies, with a particular focus on the nineteenth century and the twentieth century up to approximately 1930. This contribution will therefore more specifically address the role of the Chinese within the book trade in the former colony during that period.
