Projects Beyond Profit Migrant Entrepreneurs, Civil Society, and Social Citizenship

The chapter looks at the (potential) contribution of migrant entrepreneurs to civil society. The division of labour between state, market, and civil society in contemporary capitalist societies is shifting. According to Michael Walzer, “[c]ivil society is a project of projects”. There are, nowadays, large numbers of migrant entrepreneurs in many countries, which raises the question of what their role may be in these civil society projects. This chapter offers a more theoretical exploration of the role of migrant entrepreneurs in that project of projects. A basic typology of migrant entrepreneurs connects to their ability to provide goods and services to other citizens as projects of the larger societal project.
