Abstract This article discusses the part of sketches Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's various relations with Ukraine and Ukrainian culture, as an example of how nineteenth-century Russian composers related to Ukraine and how it was represented in their musical works. Thus, this analysis seeks to contribute to a better understanding of how music functioned within the imperial context – how it fitted into the larger cultural and political history of the empire.
