| Abstract |
During the last decades, prognosis of myocardial infarction has improved. However, if myocardial infarction is complicated by cardiogenic shock, early mortality is still unacceptably high, approximately 50%. Current treatment include vasopressor or inotropic pharmacological therapy or hemodynamic circulatory support. The most commonly used percutaneous circulatory support devices are the Intra-aortic Ballon Pump and the Impella, and several studies with these devices are presented in this thesis. Furthermore, in this thesis, several studies on improvement of the (early) diagnosis, treatment and (long-term) prognosis of cardiogenic shock are presented.
