Abstract The teleological view according to which a second birth of European theatre took place in the Church, as part of the liturgy, and this theatre subsequently moved outdoors, is not supported by documentary evidence. On the contrary : all along the medieval period and well into the seventeenth century, an indoor theatre in Churches continued to be performed - and there is nothing wrong with that. A history of spaces of performance in the 'longue durée' remains to be written, and many margins of ecclesiastical space can be explored (cemeteries, archbishops' palaces, courts of abbeys and the like).
