Abstract
In this paper, the architecture of Functional Discourse-Grammar or FDG is described. A simple interrogative clause in Esperanto is used to illustrate how a linguistic expression is built up from the formulation of its intention to its articulation. Relatively much attention is paid to the extra-grammatical conceptual and contextual components because conventional descriptions of Esperanto tend to neglect them and, as a result of this, fail to clarify certain difficulties in the language satisfactorily. In the same vein, the paper deals with a number of discontinuities in the grammatical structure itself, which go against the ease of learning the language.
