Abstract
Global efforts to reduce hunger, disease, and the impacts of climate change are under severe strain. Cuts in development aid are forcing non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to make difficult choices, even as conflicts, climate shocks, and food insecurity continue to intensify. With only a small share of the UN Sustainable Development Goals on track for 2030, the need for more effective use of limited resources is urgent.
Data and analytics offer a powerful opportunity to increase impact. Many NGOs already possess deep humanitarian expertise and strong analytical intuition, but often lack the advanced methods, infrastructure, and training needed to fully leverage data. The Analytics for a Better World (ABW) initiative addresses this gap by combining research, education, and open-source tools to make advanced analytics accessible and practical for the non-profit sector.
Drawing on real-world examples, including collaborations with The Ocean Cleanup and the World Food Programme through the Zero Hunger Lab, this inaugural lecture explores how analytics can strengthen humanitarian action and contribute to a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable world.
