Abstract The runic inscription from Bergakker (Netherlands) presents some puzzles. First of all, it exhibits a rune form not attested elsewhere which presumably has to be understood as a variant of a u-rune. Furthermore, there is the combination wa, where the a-rune was carved before the w-rune. Although it has often been assumed that the language of the inscription is East Germanic, this article emphasizes that its language might also be regarded as an early stage of West Germanic.
