Abstract In this paper the authors will analyse the complex iconography of this painting in two chronological phases, showing a representation which is so far unparalleled in Nubia and quite rare in the eastern Byzantine world. In the context of its function they will try to deal with the open question of the meaning of this painting in the context of the building.
