Elizabeth Buettner tackles the problem of British exceptionalism, asking whether the UK really is so unique among the former empire-states of Europe in cultivating the memory of past imperial exploits. Comparing Britain’s imperial aftermath with that of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark, she finds surprising similarities in terms of the moral legacies of empire and their contemporary resonances.
